The European Kunsthalle to NYC

The European Kunsthalle is proud to announce the cooperation with the Goethe-Institut New York and Ludlow 38, its downtown satellite for contemporary art. The European Kunsthalle succeeds Kunstverein München, which had supervised the programming at Ludlow 38 since its inception.
Since opening in January 2008, Ludlow 38 and its innovative programming have attracted considerable notice in Europe as well as in the United States. Effective in July 2009, the programming will be directed by the team of the European Kunsthalle: Astrid Wege (Cologne); Rike Frank (Berlin/Vienna); and Anders Kreuger (Lund), in collaboration with Tobi Maier (New York).
The European Kunsthalle was initiated in 2005 by the organization Das Loch e.V., now the European Society for Contemporary Art. Its aim was to reflect the concepts and potential of the ‘Kunsthalle’ model, to put it into perspective, and to develop it for the future. The on- site project “European Kunsthalle c/o Ebertplatz” was inaugurated in the summer of 2008 and is based on a spatial concept by Dorit Margreiter delineating an experimental set-up for presentations of international art. Showcased artists include Michel Auder, Michaela Eichwald, Janice Kerbel, Friedl Kubelka, Joachim Koester, Melvin Moti, Jürgen Stollhans, Stephen Willats and many others.
“Our aim with Ludlow 38,” says Dr. Stephan Wackwitz, program director of the Goethe-Institut New York, “is to showcase the idea and political concept of institutional forms of self-organization for artists, curators, sponsors and audiences that exists in many cities and towns all over Germany … So after having invited the Kunstverein München (which was founded in 1823) for a year, we decided to invite for 2009/10 the European Kunsthalle from Cologne, founded in 2005, thereby showing the ongoing vitality of this approach and how today it is starting to embrace European discussions and artistic practices as well.”
Anchored in Cologne, the European Kunsthalle is defined as an international cooperation structure and looks forward to the cooperation with Ludlow 38 / Goethe-Institut New York.
